Datavant expands RWE capabilities through Aetion acquisition

  • Joanne Walker

Datavant, a leading health data technology company, has announced the acquisition of Aetion, a global provider of real-world evidence (RWE) solutions. The strategic move aims to deliver a fully integrated platform for generating high-quality, decision-grade evidence by combining advanced data connectivity with robust analytics.

Aetion is widely recognized for its leading technologies, services, and data partnerships that enable life sciences and medical device companies to generate regulatory- and decision-grade RWE. Its Aetion Evidence Platform, now available on AWS Marketplace, is designed to streamline the generation of insights on the clinical effectiveness, safety, and value of medical interventions.

Datavant and Aetion will have a combined ecosystem of more than 300 data partners. Datavant’s network includes a broad range of real-world data (RWD) assets across electronic health records, claims, specialty pharmacy, registries, imaging, laboratory results, and social determinants of health. Through Aetion’s analytic capabilities, these partners will benefit from improved visibility into the utility of their data via enhanced querying, helping to scale demand and unlock new use cases across a broader range of life sciences customers.

Datavant will integrate Aetion’s capabilities into its secure and compliant health data exchange infrastructure to enhance data discovery, privacy assessment, curation, and advanced analytics. The combined offering will enable life sciences and healthcare stakeholders to more efficiently generate insights across the drug development lifecycle, from early-stage research through post-market evaluation.

“The addition of Aetion’s team of scientists and technologists further bolsters our complementary capabilities and expertise,” said Kyle Armbrester, Chief Executive Officer of Datavant. “We can better leverage data from our ecosystem of partners to support efforts before, during, and after commercialization – generating evidence from trial to treatment and beyond to deliver life-improving therapies.”

This announcement follows the launch of Datavant Connect powered by AWS Clean Rooms, which supports cloud-first data collaboration by enabling ecosystem partners to securely evaluate and combine disparate datasets. Aetion’s integration further strengthens these capabilities by enhancing privacy assessments and accelerating delivery of analytics-ready datasets.

In parallel with the acquisition, Aetion has introduced Aetion Activate, a new software solution designed to support biostatisticians and data scientists with a collaborative, auditable, and secure environment. The tool enables both code and no-code users to perform rapid, transparent analyses without the need for manual data preparation—reducing error and increasing research efficiency.

Reflecting on the announcement, Jeremy Rassen, ScD, CEO of Aetion, stated:

“With Datavant’s intent to acquire Aetion, we seek to unlock the full potential of real-world evidence by linking rich data assets and applying trusted analytics to generate reliable insights faster. This marks a huge turning point for our company and is one I am deeply proud to take with this team.”
