Boehringer Ingelheim expands real-world evidence strategy with Datavant’s tokenization and data connectivity technologies

Boehringer Ingelheim is expanding its real-world evidence (RWE) strategy with Datavant to support 75 additional clinical trials and multiple new molecular entities, using secure, privacy-preserving data connectivity to enhance clinical development and launch planning.
The expanded partnership will strengthen Boehringer Ingelheim’s RWE infrastructure by integrating Datavant’s tokenization and data linkage technologies across a broader portfolio of clinical trials and new molecular entities. This collaboration supports the growing use of real-world data (RWD) in both clinical development and commercial decision-making, with the aim of generating more precise insights into treatment effectiveness, health outcomes, and economic value.
“Our investment in real-world data underscores Boehringer Ingelheim’s commitment to using cutting-edge technologies to advance medical research,” said Paul Petraro, Executive Director and Head of the Real World Evidence Analytics Center of Excellence at Boehringer Ingelheim. “By expanding this approach across more trials and commercial launches, we are positioned to drive more personalized and cost-effective treatments, ultimately transforming patient care.”
As part of the initiative, Boehringer Ingelheim will use Datavant Connect, powered by AWS Clean Rooms, to securely assess third-party data sources within its research environment. This allows the company to streamline data discovery, transformation, and linkage without moving or sharing underlying data, helping to maintain privacy while accelerating research.
Datavant’s platform supports the exchange of over 60 million health records across a broad network that includes more than 70,000 hospitals and clinics, 75% of the 100 largest US health systems, and over 300 RWD partners.
“We are honored to support Boehringer Ingelheim in revolutionizing patient care through a pioneering data strategy. By enabling secure and efficient data linkage at scale, Boehringer Ingelheim is setting a new benchmark for medical research,” said Arnaub Chatterjee, General Manager and President, Life Sciences, Ecosystem, and Public Sector at Datavant. “This partnership exemplifies how technology can reshape healthcare and improve patient outcomes.”
A phased rollout of Datavant’s tokenization technology will be conducted to align with Boehringer Ingelheim’s existing infrastructure. The companies intend to build a scalable framework that supports future RWE studies and may serve as a model for others in the industry exploring cloud-based data strategies.
