John Snow Labs and 3Aware partner to support secure real-world evidence generation

John Snow Labs and 3Aware have announced a partnership to integrate John Snow Labs' multimodal de-identification technology into the 3Aware Evidence Vault. According to the companies, the collaboration is intended to support the secure secondary use of clinical data by enabling health systems to prepare research-ready datasets while keeping sensitive data and analytics within their own secure environments.

The integration combines 3Aware's federated Evidence Vault with John Snow Labs' de-identification technology for multimodal clinical data, including structured and unstructured electronic health record (EHR) data, PDFs, DICOM images, FHIR resources, and free-text clinical reports. Embedded within 3Aware's existing data curation and transformation workflow, the technology enables clinical data to be de-identified where it is held rather than requiring it to be transferred outside the organization for processing.

According to the companies, the integrated approach is designed to support HIPAA Expert Determination de-identification workflows, preserve longitudinal patient linkage through consistent tokenization, and support the creation of research-ready datasets. John Snow Labs' de-identification capabilities will also be made available at no additional cost to 3Aware's healthcare provider data partners.

Commenting on the partnership, David Talby, CEO of John Snow Labs, said:

The companies suggest that reducing the time needed to onboard new health system partners and prepare research-ready data could support larger-scale in silico, non-interventional observational studies. The collaboration is also intended to strengthen investigator-led research within academic medical centers and enable comparative effectiveness research and value analyses across interventions, clinical pathways, procedures, and patient subgroups. These capabilities will be supported by making it easier to analyze longitudinal clinical information, including unstructured clinical narratives that are often not captured through structured coding or claims data alone.

3Aware's Clinical Scientific Workbench and Evidence Vault enable health systems to generate real-world evidence (RWE) from longitudinal structured and unstructured clinical records processed within their own secure cloud environments. The platform supports rapid cohort identification, preserves episode-of-care context, and uses AI to identify clinically relevant signals for analysis.
