Century Health and GI Partners of Illinois launch AI-enabled RWD initiative for gastroenterology research

Century Health and GI Partners of Illinois have announced initiative to develop longitudinal, community-based datasets, using AI to extract clinical variables from structured and unstructured patient records. The initiative aims to advance research into inflammatory bowel disease and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis.

Century Health and GI Partners of Illinois (GIP) have announced a partnership to develop a real-world data (RWD) resource using longitudinal clinical data from tens of thousands of gastroenterology patients in Illinois. The initiative is intended to support research by life sciences organizations and academic researchers into disease progression, treatment effectiveness, and patient outcomes, with an initial focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).

The partnership will use Century Health’s Century Health Abstraction & Retrieval Model (CHARM) to extract research-relevant clinical variables from structured and unstructured patient data, including physician notes, pathology reports, laboratory results, imaging, and endoscopy reports. Much of the detail contained within these sources, from disease characteristics and treatment decisions to changes in patient outcomes, can be difficult to capture systematically at scale. By using AI to extract and structure this information, the initiative aims to make more of the clinical detail generated during routine care available for longitudinal analysis, potentially providing a more comprehensive view of disease progression, treatment pathways, and outcomes than structured data alone.

"Developing an in-depth understanding of complex diseases like IBD and MASH requires partnering with practices where patients are actually cared for day to day," said Vish Srivastava, Co-Founder and CEO of Century Health.

Treatment options continue to evolve in both disease areas. Patients with IBD may receive multiple therapies over the course of their care, while the MASH treatment landscape is also developing, including research into GLP-1 therapies. Longitudinal data from routine clinical practice can be used to examine treatment patterns, sequencing, effectiveness, and patient outcomes over time.

Century Health and GIP plan to use the resulting datasets to support research collaborations with life sciences and academic organizations, and academic researchers, including studies of disease progression and treatment use in routine clinical practice.

The partnership also extends GIP’s use of AI into clinical research and evidence generation, following previous applications across clinical documentation, patient engagement, and care coordination. Dr Geogy Vennikandam, CEO of GI Partners of Illinois, stated:
