BC Platforms, Modirum Platforms, VEIL.AI, and Productivity Leap unveil AI-enhanced platform for EHDS secondary framework implementation

  • Katie McCool

BC Platforms, Modirum Platforms, VEIL.AI, and Productivity Leap have launched an AI-powered platform to streamline health data access for real-world data (RWD) research under European Health Data Space secondary (EHDS2) framework regulations.

The four companies have joined forces to develop an AI-enhanced platform aimed at transforming how health data is accessed and utilized for research across Europe. This collaborative effort supports the European Health Data Space (EHDS) initiative by streamlining data management processes and aligning with the new EHDS2 framework, which facilitates the secondary use of health data in life sciences research.

Currently, most European hospitals rely on local, manual processes to manage health data access. This approach limits scalability, especially as EHDS2 introduces data queries from Health Data Access Bodies across the EU. The volume of data requests is expected to increase significantly, with some hospitals facing thousands of requests annually. This shift demands automated solutions capable of handling large-scale data queries efficiently. The new platform addresses this need by providing seamless, GDPR-compliant pathways for data discovery, submission, and analysis. It also supports federated analyses and anonymization to ensure secure, cross-border data sharing.

The platform integrates harmonization services to convert healthcare data into interoperable formats, such as OMOP, FHIR, and openEHR. This integration enables smooth workflows for research across the EU. Kari Natunen, CEO of Productivity Leap, emphasized the importance of data standardization, saying,

“Using our technology, EHR data can be quickly and affordably mapped to OMOP format, enabling automated data queries and federated data analysis.”

The platform is designed to address common challenges in health data management, such as the slow and complex approval processes for data access. By automating these processes, the platform enables hospitals and data holders to provide faster, GDPR-compliant access to critical data, allowing researchers to move more swiftly from research ideas to actionable insights.

"Our goal is to dramatically shorten the time needed from research idea to data access from months or years to days or weeks," said Timo Kanninen, CSO of BC Platforms.

VEIL.AI provides anonymization technology designed to comply with EHDS regulations. Under the EHDS framework, data is generally required to be anonymized, unless there are valid reasons for pseudonymization. VEIL.AI’s AI-enhanced technology helps preserve important data relationships within anonymized datasets, maintaining the integrity of the information. "Our AI-enhanced technology helps retain key data relationships even in anonymized formats," said Tuomo Pentikäinen, CEO of VEIL.AI.

The platform also supports Health Data Access Bodies and Trusted Data Holders—such as university hospitals—in efficiently managing data request and access approval processes. Modirum Platforms focuses on simplifying these workflows, ensuring that data requests are handled swiftly while maintaining compliance with EHDS regulations and cybersecurity standards.

"Our technology enables both Health Data Access Bodies and Trusted Data Holders to simplify and automate incoming data requests and data access processes, ensuring compliance with EHDS regulations and cybersecurity," explained Petri Anttila, Sales Executive of Modirum Platforms.

To accelerate the adoption of EHDS2, the companies are seeking partnerships with European data integrators and university hospitals to pilot the platform. These collaborations will demonstrate the platform’s ability to facilitate cross-border federated analyses and support RWD research. With EHDS2’s streamlined data handling, the platform has the potential to enhance academic and commercial research, promoting faster health data access and advancing innovation across Europe.
